Despite promotional graphics physically going up in Saudi Arabia for a showdown between “The Demon” Finn Bálor and Gunther, WWE chose to hold off on the high-profile bout for Crown Jewel 2026.
The decision to pull the match came down to a combination of creative pacing and broadcast timing, with WWE officials ultimately opting to save the clash for a larger buildup.
Creative Rationale Behind the Change
Internal discussions within WWE highlighted two primary reasons for leaving the match off Saturday’s lineup at the ANB Arena:
- Extending the Television Build: Creative personnel felt the feud deserved a longer, proper storyline build on WWE SmackDown rather than being rushed onto the international premium live event card.
- Match Card Runtime: Management determined that the four previously announced matches were sufficient for the event’s target broadcast length.
The rivalry had escalated significantly on the October 30 episode of SmackDown, where Bálor revived his “Demon” persona to lay out Gunther with a Coup de Grâce off a ladder through the announce table.
Promotional Slip-Up and Event Results
While WWE never officially announced Bálor vs. Gunther on television, earlier internal plans were confirmed when promotional banners featuring both Superstars were spotted at Riyadh Season Stadium before the event moved to the ANB Arena.
Without Bálor vs. Gunther on the card, Crown Jewel 2026 featured four major matches:
- Men’s Crown Jewel Championship: Roman Reigns defeated Sami Zayn.
- Last Man Standing Match: Cody Rhodes defeated Randy Orton.
- World Tag Team Championship: Penta and Je’Von Evans dethroned Bron Breakker and Austin Theory.
- Women’s Division Chaos: Chelsea Green defeated Liv Morgan for the Crown Jewel Title before Tiffany Stratton cashed in her Money in the Bank briefcase to capture Green’s WWE Women’s Championship.
Holding off on Bálor vs. Gunther gives WWE maximum runway to build toward their eventual match on a future broadcast. A new date for the bout has not yet been confirmed.
