Penta might be on a direct path to Roman Reigns. The WWE/AAA tournament still has several matches left to play out, but behind the scenes, there’s already talk that Penta is the name expected to emerge as the winner and head into Mexico City for the World Heavyweight Championship match on the September 14 edition of RAW.
A talent familiar with the situation indicated that the internal feeling is Penta will run the table and earn the title shot. It would be a major moment for him, and he’s already off to a strong start. Penta advanced from the opening round by defeating Laredo Kid on the August 10 RAW, putting him one step closer to the finish line.
The tournament itself was announced as part of the WWE and AAA crossover to determine Roman’s next challenger. Psycho Clown vs. La Parka is set for the August 15 AAA show, while Dragon Lee vs. Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. and Rey Fénix vs. El Fiscal will take place on the August 17 RAW.
Despite the remaining matches, Penta is reportedly the one gaining the most attention backstage. It also helps clarify earlier speculation about Roman’s opponent. El Grande Americano had been rumored for the Mexico City title match, but WWE shut that down and introduced the tournament instead.
Nothing is official until Penta actually wins out, but he’s through the first round and the internal expectation reportedly has him going all the way. If that plays out, Penta vs. Roman Reigns becomes the destination waiting at the end of the bracket.
