According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE had been planning a United States Championship match between Trick Williams and Carmelo Hayes for SummerSlam as of a few weeks ago. That information adds context to recent developments involving Ricky Saints and the title picture.
Saints earned his opportunity after defeating Hayes in a No. 1 Contender’s Match, which positioned him as the next challenger. However, his title match at Night of Champions may not have altered the long-term plans. Williams successfully defended the championship in Saudi Arabia, finishing Saints with the Trick Shot to retain the title.

Following the match, the situation escalated further. Lil Yachty appeared and attacked Ricky Saints with a kendo stick before delivering a People’s Elbow. He then celebrated alongside Williams, leaving Saints laid out after the title bout.
Despite Saints receiving the opportunity, the reported SummerSlam plan involving Hayes remains significant. Williams and Hayes share a well-established history from their time together, followed by a split that created tension between the two. That background provides a clear foundation for a championship match on a major stage.
At this point, it is not confirmed whether WWE has adjusted its plans following Night of Champions or if the company is still moving forward with Williams vs. Hayes for SummerSlam. The earlier report indicates that the match was in place prior to recent events, but the current direction remains to be seen.
