John Cena may be set for a return at WWE Backlash, as local promotion for the event has begun advertising his appearance.
The venue hosting the show, Yuengling Center, is currently promoting Cena for the May 9 premium live event. A listing on the arena’s website reads:
“JOHN CENA RETURNS TO TAMPA AT BACKLASH!”
John Cena Backlash Appearance Not Yet Confirmed
Despite the advertisement, WWE has not officially confirmed Cena for the event. However, Cena himself previously hinted that he could be involved in something at Backlash.
“Man if only it were 2023 again!! I might have different business at @WWE #Backlash Alas, the years pass. I am still gonna try to do something epic in Tampa for 5/9. I promised Club WWE something special… stay tuned,” Cena wrote on social media.
His message referenced WWE’s fan experience initiative, suggesting that even if he does not compete, he could still play a role during the event weekend.
Backlash is expected to feature a major title match, with Jacob Fatu challenging Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship.
The two are also scheduled to come face-to-face on RAW ahead of the event, adding further momentum to the match.
While nothing has been officially announced, the combination of venue advertising and Cena’s own comments has fueled speculation about a potential appearance.
For now, his status remains unconfirmed, but the possibility of Cena returning at Backlash adds another layer of interest to the upcoming show.
