Backstage Frustration Grows As WrestleMania 42 Plans Remain Unsettled In WWE

Backstage Frustration Grows As WrestleMania 42 Plans Remain Unsettled In WWE – WrestleMania 42 is just over two months away, but a new report suggests WWE’s creative direction is far from settled, with growing frustration among talent over constant changes and a lack of clarity regarding their roles on the card.

During the February 9, 2026 edition of the Self Made Session, Self Made Pro stated that backstage patience is wearing thin as creative plans continue to shift. According to the report, even main event–level WWE Superstars are unsure of what they will be doing at WrestleMania.

“Things are shifting around, and talent are frustrated about that. I was told that there are numerous main event–level WWE talents who, at present, don’t know for sure what they’re doing at WrestleMania.”

That uncertainty aligns with comments made this week on Wrestling Observer Radio by Bryan Alvarez and Dave Meltzer. Meltzer noted that WWE had a full WrestleMania 42 card mapped out prior to the Royal Rumble, but those plans have since been repeatedly reworked.

“Before the Rumble, they had a complete card for WrestleMania… but I was told that everything is up in the air,” Meltzer said.

The frequent changes have reportedly led to internal criticism of Paul Levesque, with some comparisons being made to the last-minute creative shifts that defined the final years of the Vince McMahon era.

“There’s been a lot of internal criticism of Paul Levesque… they have a plan, and then they change the plan. And right now everything is up in the air.”

Meltzer and Alvarez also questioned the reasoning behind altering a card that has yet to be announced publicly.

“They think that changing a card that nobody knows makes sense. It’s not like they have a bad card out there and people aren’t buying tickets. They don’t have a card out there.”

As of now, only one match is considered locked in for WrestleMania 42: CM Punk vs. Roman Reigns. Other high-profile matches, including a potential Cody Rhodes vs. Drew McIntyre bout, are reportedly not finalized.

“Even Cody and Drew is not a sure thing right now,” Meltzer said. “The only match that’s a sure thing is CM Punk and Roman Reigns.”

Alvarez suggested that ticket pricing, rather than creative direction, may be contributing to WWE’s concerns.

“You’re trying to sell 50, 60,000 seats for two nights… with crazy prices to get in,” he said. “It may be too expensive now.”

With Las Vegas hotel prices rising and international fans planning ahead for the World Cup, WWE’s premium pricing strategy could be impacting early ticket sales. As WrestlingAttitude.Com continues to follow developments, WrestleMania 42’s biggest question may not be the final card, but whether WWE can stabilize its creative process in time.
