It has been confirmed that WWE booked Punk vs. Bálor largely because Punk wanted the program. He has reportedly been interested in working with Bálor for some time, and the February premium live event provided the right opportunity to make it happen.

The title match came together on the February 9 episode of RAW, when Bálor interrupted Michael Cole and entered the ring before an interview segment with Punk could begin. Bálor claimed Punk was dealing with injuries and insisted he was responsible. He also referenced his recent issues involving Roman Reigns and said he would not allow anyone else to take credit for what he had done.
Punk responded by confronting Bálor in the ring and agreeing to defend the World Heavyweight Championship. Adam Pearce attempted to shut the situation down, citing the importance of protecting the WrestleMania 42 main event, but Punk pushed back and demanded the match be made.
The bout is now set for Elimination Chamber on February 28 in Chicago, giving Punk the chance to defend his title in his hometown. The two previously faced each other in Ireland, where Punk picked up the win, adding further history to the rivalry heading into this rematch.
With WrestleMania 42 approaching, the decision to run Punk vs. Bálor now appears to be a deliberate move driven by Punk’s creative preference, as WWE builds toward its biggest event of the year while still delivering a marquee championship defense in Chicago.
