Cody Rhodes And Drew McIntyre Set For Three Stages Of Hell Match In Berlin – The rivalry between Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre is set to escalate in dramatic fashion, as the two are scheduled to collide in a Three Stages of Hell match. The stipulation was announced during the December 26 episode of WWE SmackDown, with the bout officially set for the January 9 episode of SmackDown from Berlin, Germany.
McIntyre made the announcement himself during an in-ring segment that quickly turned personal. Before revealing the match stipulation, McIntyre attempted to provoke Rhodes by making pointed remarks about his family. SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis intervened and physically restrained Rhodes to prevent the situation from boiling over. Once the Three Stages of Hell match was confirmed, however, McIntyre crossed the line further by telling Rhodes to say hi to his dad in hell for him. That comment proved enough to push Rhodes past Aldis, allowing McIntyre to strike with a sudden Claymore Kick.
Earlier in the night, McIntyre appeared in a separate segment where he addressed his recent behavior. He revealed that he had paid the fine for striking a referee and offered a sarcastic apology. McIntyre apologized to the official for being hit in the face with a Claymore, then continued by mocking the referee’s career, apologizing for him never making it as a wrestler and suggesting his wife must be disappointed in him. The segment reinforced McIntyre’s increasingly unhinged mindset as his feud with Rhodes continues.
Following WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event, McIntyre met privately with Aldis to discuss what he described as an unfair working environment and his belief that he had been wronged in recent Undisputed WWE Title matches. Aldis ultimately agreed to grant McIntyre another championship opportunity and allowed him to choose the stipulation, leading directly to the Three Stages of Hell announcement.
