Kenny Omega’s Diverticulitis Recovery Continues to Influence AEW Creative Direction

Kenny Omega’s Diverticulitis Recovery Continues to Influence AEW Creative Direction – Kenny Omega’s return to the ring has been one of AEW’s most closely watched stories, but even now, nearly two years after his hospitalization, the aftereffects of diverticulitis continue to shape both his daily life and his role within the company. According to a new report from Dave Meltzer, AEW is actively structuring Omega’s creative direction around his ongoing health challenges, particularly by limiting his involvement in long singles matches.

Omega was forced to step away from competition in December 2023 after being hospitalized with a severe and life-threatening case of diverticulitis. The condition required major surgery in May 2024, during which doctors removed 25 centimeters of his colon. Even after returning to in-ring action, Omega has been candid about the lingering impact of the condition, explaining that his health fluctuates day to day and requires him to constantly adjust his performance style.

These realities are reportedly playing a direct role in how AEW books one of its top stars. Meltzer noted that the company is focused on reducing Omega’s time in physically demanding singles bouts:

“They are trying to avoid putting him in a long singles match and that may be part of the reason they put him back with the Young Bucks.”

Omega’s recent reunion with The Young Bucks took place at Full Gear on November 22, 2025, where the trio embraced after defeating Jurassic Express. The reconciliation has been widely viewed as a major storyline moment, but Meltzer’s report suggests it may also serve a practical purpose—allowing Omega to remain active in the ring while sharing the workload in trios matches, which demand less from him physically than extended one-on-one encounters.

As Omega continues to navigate the complexities of his recovery, AEW appears committed to balancing his health needs with his presence on television. For fans, it means seeing “The Cleaner” in a new phase of his career—one that prioritizes longevity while still celebrating his contributions to the company’s history.
