WWE Planning Major Role for Rey Mysterio in AAA Partnership – WWE reportedly intends to place Rey Mysterio in a major role as part of its ongoing partnership with AAA once the Hall of Famer is cleared to wrestle again. According to WrestleVotes Radio, company officials strongly believe Mysterio should be positioned at the forefront of AAA programming under WWE’s direction.
Mysterio has been sidelined since undergoing surgery in April 2025 to repair a torn groin and ruptured eardrum but is said to be making solid progress in his recovery. Sources indicate that WWE also wants to stage another AAA co-branded streaming event before the end of the year, with Survivor Series weekend in San Diego, California, being the most likely target. San Diego, which has officially recognized Mysterio with a day in his honor, would provide a fitting stage for his return.
WrestleVotes Radio further speculated that a possible main event could see Mysterio challenge his son, Dominik Mysterio, for the AAA Mega Championship at San Diego’s Petco Park. Such a match would continue the father-son rivalry that began when Dominik turned on his father at Clash at the Castle 2022, leading to their clash at WrestleMania 39, where Rey emerged victorious.
Mysterio’s history with AAA runs deep. From 1992 to 1996, he competed in the promotion, helping popularize the lucha libre style in the United States through rivalries with Psicosis and Juventud Guerrera. Though his WWE career has spanned decades, he has maintained ties to AAA, recently appearing at events like Worlds Collide 2025 and TripleMania XXXIII while recovering from injury.
The AAA–WWE partnership debuted with the AAA X WWE Worlds Collide event on June 7, which featured inter-promotional matches, including The Judgment Day (Finn Bálor, Damian Priest, and Dominik Mysterio) defeating El Texano Jr., Octagón Jr., and Psycho Clown in the main event.
