The Young Bucks Talk Reinventing Themselves in AEW – It’s been a turbulent stretch for The Young Bucks in AEW, following their dramatic loss of Executive Vice President status at All In: Texas last month. But for Matt and Nick Jackson, the fallout has been far from unexpected—or unwanted.
In a recent interview with Undisputed’s Justin Barrasso, the Jackson brothers made it clear that everything happening on-screen right now is part of a deliberate plan of their own making.
“My mother-in-law and kids specifically, when they tell me how embarrassed they are for me, I can’t help but laugh when I tell them that this was our idea,” said Matt Jackson. “We’re born to play these types of roles. Many wrestlers in the business prefer not to take on these types of stories, which immediately makes us more interested in doing them.”
Matt went on to explain their approach to character development, embracing humor and vulnerability as a way to enhance their performance.
“I think there’s a charm in being self-deprecating. There’s also a skill in being funny but still being able to go in the ring at the same time. Kurt Angle is a great example of that. I think it makes you more of an all-around entertaining wrestler.”
Nick Jackson echoed those sentiments, stating that being open to criticism and comedy is essential in the pro wrestling industry.
“We love to make fun of ourselves,” Nick added. “If you can’t be the butt of a joke in this business sometimes, you probably picked a bad profession. We also like to reinvent our character work, and that’s exactly what this has given us. We’ve learned from guys like [Chris] Jericho who always changed with the times, and we take pride in it.”
Even with their EVP roles gone, The Young Bucks remain active players both on camera and behind the scenes. Their latest run sees them embracing an unapologetically satirical take on their real-life demotion, blurring the lines between fiction and reality in a way only they can.
