Seth Rollins: “I Fooled the Entire World” – Seth Rollins broke his silence on Monday regarding the elaborate ruse that led to his shocking World Heavyweight Championship victory at WWE SummerSlam Night One.
Appearing on The Rich Eisen Show, the newly crowned champion addressed the fake knee injury that had fans and even fellow wrestlers questioning his health for weeks. Rollins, who lost to LA Knight at Saturday Night’s Main Event in early July, had since been seen wearing a knee brace and using crutches — including during his previous guest-hosting stint on Eisen’s show.
At SummerSlam night one, Rollins pulled off the ultimate surprise. After CM Punk defeated GUNTHER in a grueling main event to win the World Heavyweight Title, Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase to immediately take the championship from his longtime rival.
Asked directly if the injury was legitimate, Rollins remained coy.
“Well, look, Rich, as much as I love you. And I love you. I love all of you guys, I cannot divulge my secrets right now,” Rollins said. “Tonight, tune in to Netflix. We will be live 8 p.m. Eastern/5 Pacific. Live globally. You can hear all of it, but I can’t get into too much here. I just wanted to come by and extend my gratitude to you guys and to let you know how much I appreciate you giving me a platform to fool the entire world, really. Fooled the entire world. There’s no other way to slice it. I fooled the entire world.”
Rollins admitted that while the payoff was worth it, maintaining the illusion was far from easy.
“It was excruciating,” he said of hobbling around on crutches in public. “But the end result was more beautiful than I ever imagined.”
He also revealed that he wasn’t alone in keeping up appearances. His wife, Becky Lynch, and their four-year-old daughter, Roux, were both involved — willingly or not.
“My wife is an unwilling participant in this ruse. She was very upset with me for making her lie to all of her friends and family for the better part of three weeks,” Rollins said. “She was very upset. I said, ‘Honey, just trust me. The payoff will be great.’”
As for his daughter, she was less discreet. “My daughter, she thought it was a game… I told her, ‘Daddy’s got a pretend boo-boo.’ First thing she did is went and told her preschool teacher Ms. Joy. First thing she did. Immediately.”
Rollins is in Brooklyn tonight for RAW at the Barclays Center, where he’s expected to appear live. WWE has recently filed a trademark for “The Vision,” believed to be the name of Rollins’ new faction alongside Paul Heyman, Bron Breakker, and Bronson Reed.
