Randy Orton to Break All-Time SummerSlam Match Record – Randy Orton is set to make history at SummerSlam 2025, officially becoming the superstar with the most matches in the event’s long-standing legacy. When Orton steps into the ring next month, he will compete in his 17th SummerSlam match, surpassing the previous record of 16 that he shared with WWE Hall of Famer The Undertaker.
Orton’s SummerSlam journey began over two decades ago in 2003, when he entered the Elimination Chamber to compete for the World Heavyweight Championship. Just one year later, he made history by defeating Chris Benoit at SummerSlam 2004 to become the youngest World Heavyweight Champion in WWE history. From that point forward, “The Viper” became a staple of WWE’s summer spectacular.
In 2005, Orton faced The Undertaker in a highly personal rivalry. The following year, he squared off with Hulk Hogan, adding another legend to his list of SummerSlam opponents. His championship pedigree was on display in back-to-back WWE Title bouts with John Cena in 2007 and 2009, and again in 2010 when he challenged Sheamus. Orton and Christian’s rivalry culminated in a World Heavyweight Title match at SummerSlam 2011, and he famously cashed in his Money in the Bank contract on Daniel Bryan in 2013, turning heel and aligning with The Authority.
Orton’s list of SummerSlam opponents reads like a Hall of Fame roster—Roman Reigns (2014), Sheamus (2015), Brock Lesnar (2016), and Rusev (2017). In more recent years, he competed for the WWE Championship against Kofi Kingston in 2019 and Drew McIntyre in 2020. He also captured the RAW Tag Team Titles alongside Riddle in 2021 as part of RK-Bro.
With his scheduled tag team bout this year, Orton extends his unmatched longevity and consistency in WWE’s main event picture. Few superstars have remained as relevant for as long as Orton, and breaking this record at The Biggest Party of the Summer only adds another accolade to his Hall of Fame-worthy résumé.
