Originally, Austin Theory was slated to defend his WWE United States Championship against Santos Escobar, who had earned this title opportunity by triumphing in the United States Championship Invitational, besting none other than his fellow LWO member, Rey Mysterio, in the finals.
However, Theory’s aggressive attack on Escobar backstage prior to the show raised concerns about the challenger’s condition. Despite these setbacks, Escobar was determined to compete. As he made his way to the ring for the title match, Theory ambushed him once again, further casting doubt on the bout’s outcome.
In a surprising turn of events, WWE Official Adam Pearce intervened. He announced that due to Escobar’s compromised state, Mysterio would step in as the new challenger for the WWE United States Championship.
