Former WWE star Joe Gacy, currently competing on the independent circuit as Joseph Sawyer, suffered a knee injury during Game Changer Wrestling’s GCW The Score event on Saturday, forcing an abrupt doctors’ stoppage during his title defense.
Sawyer was in the middle of his second GCW Championship defense of the night—having successfully retained against Jazzy Yang earlier on the card—when a corner maneuver against challenger Jeffrey John brought the contest to a sudden halt.
Match Stoppage And Post-Show Medical Status
The incident occurred after John delivered a cannonball into the corner, connecting directly with Sawyer’s knee:
- Title Match Cut Short: Following the impact, Sawyer was unable to continue. The referee called off the bout, and Sawyer exited the ringside area without the GCW Championship belt.
- Initial Statement: Sawyer addressed fans on social media shortly after the event, confirming he lost sensation in his leg immediately following the move:
“To clear the air. Yes I did get hurt. No I didn’t finish the match. I tried to get the feeling back in my knee to see if I could and sadly I couldn’t. Luckily it seems like it isn’t anything that will put me out for an extended about of time. So yes I think I’ll be okay for now.”
- Encouraging Sunday Update: By Sunday morning, the former NXT star provided a reassuring follow-up, noting that his mobility had already improved:
“Actually walking better already this morning thank you to everyone that reached out 🤟🏻”
The scare comes just days after Sawyer and Samuel Shaw (formerly Dexter Lumis)—both released during WWE roster cuts on April 24—made a surprise appearance on Thursday’s live episode of TNA iMPACT, signing a contract with the company.
