Stephen A. Smith could become more involved with World Wrestling Entertainment in the near future, as new reports suggest serious internal discussions are ongoing regarding a possible working relationship.
The update comes from Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, where he revealed that Smith’s name has been discussed heavily behind the scenes within WWE.
According to Meltzer, there appears to be significantly stronger internal support for Smith compared to the reaction surrounding Pat McAfee earlier this year.
“We haven’t seen anything with Stephen A. Smith yet, although, boy, has that name been talked about, and I know it’s serious talk,” Meltzer said.
He then noted that several people within WWE who were reportedly unhappy about McAfee’s recent involvement are much more open to Smith joining the company in some capacity.
“Put it this way, a lot of the people who were not happy about Pat McAfee, in fact, are favorable to Stephen A. As far as internally, it goes,” Meltzer added.
Stephen A. Smith Already Involved In WWE Promotion
The report follows Smith’s involvement in the promotional push for WrestleMania 42 through ESPN coverage.
McAfee previously became part of the storyline involving Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton heading into WrestleMania 42. Reports later stated that his insertion into the angle reportedly originated from TKO CEO Ari Emanuel rather than WWE creative itself, leading to frustration backstage.
Smith has already appeared prominently in WWE-related ESPN programming following the launch of ESPN Unlimited broadcasts for WWE premium live events in the United States beginning with Wrestlepalooza in September 2025.
His WrestleMania weekend involvement also generated strong reactions from wrestling audiences. Danhausen publicly cursed Smith ahead of WrestleMania, while fans reportedly booed Smith during night one of the event.
Despite that reaction, earlier reports from WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select claimed ESPN sources were enthusiastic about expanding Smith’s WWE role moving forward.
Those reports also stated that a larger payoff connected to Smith’s WWE involvement had reportedly been pitched for summer 2026.
As of now, WWE has not officially announced any formal agreement involving Stephen A. Smith, but internal discussions regarding a larger partnership reportedly continue.
