AJ Styles has opened up about his new responsibilities with WWE following his retirement from in-ring competition earlier this year.
The former WWE Champion and future Hall of Famer discussed his new role during the premiere episode of his podcast, Phenomenally Retro. While the podcast mainly focuses on Styles’ long-time interest in video games, he also spoke about how he is now contributing to WWE behind the scenes after stepping away from active competition at the Royal Rumble.
According to Styles, one of his primary responsibilities involves scouting talent and offering guidance to wrestlers who may have potential opportunities with the company.
“I’m on the internet and I’m checking out talent because it’s kind of going to be part of my job with WWE now. I’m looking for talent and I’m looking to see what I can do, if I can do anything for them, if they can get better, you know, little things like that,” he explained. “Because if there is a possibility of them maybe getting a WWE ID [contract] or something like that, then hopefully I can facilitate and get that to happen.”
Styles also noted that his new duties will extend beyond evaluating independent wrestlers. His role includes checking in with WWE talent across different levels of the company, including NXT and the main roster.
Part of that responsibility will involve communicating directly with talent and helping address morale or performance concerns when necessary.
“So as of right now it’s a little slow, but there are phone calls that are going to have to be made to make sure my job is done and it’s not just with indie talent. It’ll be NXT talent and it may mean main roster talent as well. I’m gonna go to Seattle for the next Monday Night RAW, talk with talent. Who knows, sometimes you need to talk to somebody to see how they’re feeling and maybe they want to go down to the PC and they wanna work on some stuff. The morale, if I can help make sure it’s still there in a good way, I want to be that guy,” he continued.
Styles officially retired from active competition at the Royal Rumble, bringing an end to a career that included multiple championships and high-profile matches across several promotions.
In the weeks following his retirement, there was speculation about what his future with WWE would look like. Recent reports indicated that Styles signed a new contract to remain with the company in a backstage role, and his comments on the podcast confirm that he will now be involved in talent development and support moving forward.
