We are live from the Centre Bell in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, as Sami Zayn makes his way to the ring to start the show.
Sami welcomes everyone in French. He says it feels good to be home. He says tomorrow, momentum is a strange thing in WWE, but he feels he has all of the momentum. Tomorrow night, he has the chance, in Montreal, to become the number one contender… Trick Williams’ music interrupts and he makes his way to the ring.

The last time you had a chance for the title, in Montreal, you didn’t get the job done. That is the difference between them. He gets the job done. He says he is here to be WWE champion and he will say it to your face in your city.
Sami looks at Trick and he says a few things are true. He says he did lose a title match in his city. It was a bitter pill to swallow. You might be a future champion. The thing you said that was right is that they are not on the same level. You need to remember when you step in this ring, you are dealing with the best of the best. You have all of the potential. When you reach your potential, if you are lucky, you will be half as good as he is. If you think he is wrong, you can do something about it now.

Priest says that he believes Trick is afraid of him. You think if you say the wrong thing, he will drop your ass where you stand. He asks Trick if he is afraid. Go ahead and say something. If you don’t want to say anything, you can do something.

We return with Michael Cole sitting down with Cody Rhodes, who immediately shifts the focus away from losing the championship and toward reclaiming it, saying he’d rather talk about winning the Royal Rumble for a third time. Cole cuts him off to address the elephant in the room — Jacob Fatu — and Cody acknowledges the question with respect just as Fatu storms in. Nick Aldis tries to remove him, but Cody waves it off and invites Fatu to join the conversation.
Fatu says his only concern was Drew McIntyre after Drew kicked his teeth in, and he doesn’t care how Cody feels. He accuses Cody of trying to be the hero by putting his hands on him, which got Fatu thinking. Cody fires back that Fatu wasn’t thinking — he was acting — and bluntly says that kind of behavior is what landed him in jail in the first place. Fatu doesn’t deny it, admitting those mistakes nearly cost him everything, including his job before it even started, but says fixing those choices made him a better man and led him to where he is now.
Cody points out that he isn’t champion anymore and that their confrontation should have been about the title. Fatu responds that it didn’t need to be a title match, noting Drew was already halfway out the door before he ever got involved. When Cody reminds him that he’s never been a champion, Fatu smirks and says they don’t make men like him anymore. He asks if Cody thinks he’s a loose cannon, insisting instead that he’s completely in control — and telling Cody to think long and hard about that as the tension hangs thick in the room.

1/23 WWE SmackDown Preview
Although IYO SKY and Rhea Ripley will defend the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship tomorrow night at Saturday Night’s Main Event against Judgment Day’s Liv Morgan and Roxanne Perez, their next challengers will be determined tonight. Lash Legend & Nia Jax, Giulia & Kiana James, and Alexa Bliss & Charlotte Flair collide in a Triple Threat No. 1 Contenders Match. All three teams have been circling the titles for weeks, but Legend and Jax have been the most aggressive, blindsiding Bliss and Flair multiple times — including last Friday, when they attacked the duo moments after Flair and Bliss defeated Giulia and James. With tensions boiling over, tonight’s match could reshape the entire division.
Tonga Loa and JC Mateo came close to dethroning The Wyatt Sicks’ Dexter Lumis and Joe Gacy for the WWE Tag Team Championship on December 19, but a chaotic brawl between both stables derailed the match. Despite the loss, MFT gets another opportunity tonight as they challenge Lumis and Gacy once again. With both factions still at each other’s throats, the rematch promises to be just as volatile.
Carmelo Hayes continues to build his reputation as one of WWE’s most active champions. After retaining the United States Championship against Johnny Gargano, Shinsuke Nakamura, and most recently TNA X‑Division Champion Leon Slater, Hayes will issue another U.S. Open Challenge tonight. With momentum on his side and the locker room buzzing, the question becomes who will step up — and whether Hayes’ streak can continue.
Before Trick Williams and Damian Priest meet tomorrow night in a Fatal Four‑Way No. 1 Contenders Match for the Undisputed WWE Championship — alongside Randy Orton and Sami Zayn — they will face each other one‑on‑one tonight. With both men looking to build momentum heading into Saturday Night’s Main Event, this match could set the tone for tomorrow’s high‑stakes showdown.
Jade Cargill has had several tense encounters with Jordynne Grace in recent weeks as Grace pushes for a WWE Women’s Championship opportunity. Tonight, however, Cargill must shift her focus to Chelsea Green in a non‑title match. Last Friday, Grace defeated Green in quick fashion, and Green attempted a post‑match attack — only to miss and accidentally strike Cargill. With emotions running high, Cargill enters tonight’s match with something to prove.
Additionally, ahead of his career‑threatening match against GUNTHER at the Royal Rumble — where he must retire if he loses — AJ Styles will appear on SmackDown for a conversation with General Manager Nick Aldis. Aldis extended the invitation publicly on X, and with Styles’ future hanging in the balance, their discussion could have major implications heading into next weekend.
