Santos Escobar Now a Free Agent, AEW Move Widely Expected – Santos Escobar is officially a free agent following the expiration of his WWE contract at midnight on Tuesday, October 7. His departure was confirmed when WWE moved his profile to the alumni section of its official website. Escobar himself acknowledged the end of his WWE tenure with a brief video message on social media captioned “Palante,” a Spanish expression meaning “forward” or “onward.”
Escobar’s next move has quickly become a major topic of conversation across the wrestling industry. According to a report from Wrestling Observer Radio, speculation is growing within WWE that Escobar could be headed to AEW. During the show, Bryan Alvarez suggested that Escobar “might have already signed with AEW,” though Dave Meltzer clarified that he could not yet confirm such a move. Meltzer added that WWE officials had been expecting Escobar’s departure for several weeks, noting that many inside the company believe AEW is the most likely destination for the 41-year-old star.
“Unless he signed at the last minute, he is done. They’ve been expecting him to leave for some time. They obviously took him away from Angel and Humberto for that very reason—not expecting him to stay—and yeah, he is gone,” Meltzer stated. “I do know multiple people there who expect him to go to AEW. I don’t know if he does or he doesn’t. He’s 41 years old. I don’t know. Some people they take, some people they don’t.”
The creative decision to separate Escobar from his Legado Del Fantasma stablemates, Angel and Humberto (known collectively as Los Garza), now appears to have been a deliberate step as WWE prepared for his exit. If Escobar indeed signs with AEW, he would follow in the footsteps of Andrade, who made his return to the promotion last week after leaving WWE.
