John Cena Says Hair Loss Journey Changed His Life and Acting Career – John Cena is opening up about a personal transformation that not only improved his confidence but also gave his acting career a boost — and it all started with WWE fans taunting his thinning hair.
In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Cena revealed that it was fan reactions during WWE events that motivated him to take action regarding his hair loss. Signs in the crowd with phrases like “The bald John Cena” pushed him to face the issue head-on.
“As I was trying to hide my hair loss, the audience was bringing it to light,” Cena admitted. “They pushed me into going to see what my options were.”
Cena says he’s now fully embraced a self-care routine that includes red-light therapy, minoxidil, vitamins, specialized shampoo and conditioner, and — most significantly — a hair transplant procedure he underwent in November 2024.
“I hate the fact that if there wasn’t so much shame around it, I’d have gotten it done 10 years ago,” Cena said. “I thought I was alone, but seven or eight out of 10 [men] suffer from thinning or baldness.”
Cena emphasized that there’s no shame in hair restoration, saying, “If somebody’s going to sweat me for that, I don’t think there’s any shame in that. It completely changed the course of my life.”
According to the WWE legend, the results have helped him both personally and professionally. He credits his fuller hair with giving him more range as an actor.
“A different hairstyle can identify a part that can get me more work, do the thing I love to do,” he explained.
Cena also reflected on his early missteps in Hollywood. During a recent appearance at Fan Expo Denver, he said he initially joined the movie industry not for artistic fulfillment but to draw attention back to WWE.
“I was run out of the movie business in 2009 for doing bad movies where I wasn’t present,” Cena told PEOPLE. “I thought that just because I wore a golden leather belt on Monday and Friday, they’d come see whatever I’m doing. It’s not true.”
Since then, Cena has embraced acting more seriously, appearing in high-profile films and TV shows while maintaining an active, albeit less frequent, WWE schedule. His evolving look and renewed focus on performance have helped him stand out in a competitive industry, proving that even a WWE veteran can reinvent himself.
