WWE World Tag Team Champion Austin Theory discussed his current run with The Vision and reflected on how the faction has battled through injuries and shifting momentum since its inception.
Speaking with Sam Roberts backstage at the Barclays Center after this week’s WWE RAW, Theory opened up about the hurdles the group has faced, why he aligned with the stable to regain his footing, and his current partnership with Maxxine Dupri.
Overcoming Injuries And Realizing The New Era
Reflecting on the challenges that have plagued The Vision, Theory admitted that constant setbacks have derailed their consistency:
“I think The Vision has had a lot of hiccups, and specifically injuries. It seems like when we have it all together, we lose a piece, and then we kind of get a piece back and then we lose another. For me though, I think my whole reason for joining the group was the heights that I’ve seen here in WWE and the things that I’ve done, and kind of losing that in a way, and trying to figure out that path to get back up.”
Theory also noted how watching from the sidelines during his recovery from a hernia surgery shifted his perspective on the WWE locker room:
“I think my time out, like during the injury, the hernia situation, for me it was like I’m seeing these guys come out every week — and from before when I was on the roster, I was the young guy. These were all guys: Bobby Lashley, Sheamus, Rey Mysterio, John Cena, Edge. All these guys I grew up watching. So, I’m kind of facing those guys. But then, during this injury time, I’m seeing that that’s all kind of changed in a way, and now I’m seeing Logan Paul, a young guy. I’m seeing Bronson Reed, a young guy. Bron Breakker, a young guy, and then, The Wiseman himself is working with all of them…”
The “Theory Maxxing” Dynamic With Maxxine Dupri
Shifting focus to his on-screen pairing with Maxxine Dupri, Theory explained that their shared experiences of missing out on consistent opportunities made them natural allies:
“I think my choice of returning the way I did, for me, like especially with what we have on the table right now with the group, me and Maxxine (Dupri), there’s so much there, and for me it’s like, man, give us something, give us something. Let’s go.”
“Maxxine, someone that’s super talented, in the same kind of situation in a way of just not really seeing her get opportunities and then they kind of go away, and then you’re just hanging out, and I kind of saw myself in her in that situation. So I think that’s why the dynamic works, and then it’s like, hey… I wanna do things right. But, maybe we gotta be a little bad about it. Maybe we gotta take advantage; maybe we gotta just poke the bear a little bit. When it comes to us… it’s maximum pressure. It’s Theory Maxxing. You can’t deny it, you know? When people see us, they get blown away. It is what it is and I think in any dynamic you put us in, especially chasing championships, chasing main events, big moments, we’re made for that.”
Theory and tag team partner Bron Breakker will head into Crown Jewel in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to defend the World Tag Team Championship against Penta and Je’Von Evans.
