Steve Maclin’s departure from TNA continues to draw attention, and Matt Hardy has now shared his perspective on the situation.
As confirmed on June 7, 2026, TNA released both Maclin and Myla Grace, with the decision taking effect immediately. Maclin later clarified that he had requested his release the week prior, bringing an end to a five-year run that included a reign as TNA World Champion and a reputation as one of the promotion’s most intense in-ring competitors.
Speaking on The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast, Hardy admitted the timing caught him off guard. He expected Maclin to remain with the company longer and indicated that negotiations had been ongoing before things ultimately broke down.
“It’s going to be interesting for sure. I just know that he was still going to be around at TNA for a little while, and I think he was doing some negotiating, trying to figure out what works best for him. And I don’t think he could find something that worked for everyone, all parties involved, and then he just asked if he could have his release.”
Hardy also revealed he learned about the departure on the same day as TNA’s Battle for the Brave event, making the news even more surprising given Maclin’s role within the company.
“And actually, I just heard about it earlier in the day—the day of the show, Battle for the Brave. I don’t know, man. It’s going to be really interesting.”
Despite the sudden nature of the exit, Hardy had nothing but praise for Maclin’s work ethic and presence in the locker room.
“I mean, he’s a very talented guy. He’s very passionate. He’s hardworking. He’s universally liked. I’m curious, I’m excited—we’ll see.”
The discussion also touched on Maclin’s future. With free agency now open, companies like WWE and All Elite Wrestling have already been mentioned as possible landing spots. Hardy also pointed to another option within the AEW structure: Ring of Honor.
“I mean, there is a space out there under the All Elite Wrestling umbrella, at Ring of Honor. I know he has a good relationship with Scott D’Amore.”
That connection to Scott D’Amore could become a factor, given their history in TNA. While Hardy stopped short of predicting Maclin’s next move, he emphasized that the former champion has multiple paths available.
“I mean, who knows? But it’ll be interesting to see what he ultimately ends up doing. And I wish him the best, whatever it is. And who knows—he’s a pretty smart guy.”
Maclin’s exit follows earlier reports of frustration with creative direction and contract structure within TNA, though he has not publicly detailed those issues. What is clear is that he leaves with strong credentials, including a world title reign and a hard-hitting style that fits multiple promotions.
For now, his next destination remains undecided. As Hardy pointed out, Maclin has options, and his next move will be one to watch closely.
