EVIL WWE ring name confirmed
During that debut segment, commentary — led by Vic Joseph — avoided formally naming him, instead using the word “evil” in a descriptive sense rather than introducing a new ring name. That left some uncertainty at the time, but the trademark filing has now effectively confirmed the direction WWE is taking.
Internally, the report notes that EVIL is currently listed under his real name, Takaaki Watanabe, suggesting the transition to “Nox Raijin” may be rolled out gradually on television.
The name itself carries a clear thematic identity. “Nox” refers to the Roman goddess of night, while “Raijin” is the Japanese god of thunder and lightning. The combination points to a character presentation built around darkness and destructive force, aligning with the persona EVIL established throughout his career.
Background and transition to WWE
Before arriving in WWE, EVIL spent 14 years in New Japan Pro-Wrestling, where he developed into a main-event level talent. He was a central figure in factions such as Los Ingobernables de Japon and later Bullet Club, adapting his character across different eras.
His peak came in 2020 when he captured both the IWGP Heavyweight and IWGP Intercontinental Championships at the same time, cementing his position as one of the promotion’s top stars.
EVIL’s contract with NJPW expired in January 2026, opening the door for his move to WWE. Prior to debuting, reports indicated that he specifically requested to start in NXT rather than being placed directly on the main roster. That approach allows for a controlled introduction and character development under the new identity.
He is also known to fans as the partner of Iyo Sky, further linking him to an established WWE presence.
With the Nox Raijin name now confirmed, WWE’s presentation for EVIL is beginning to take shape as he transitions into this next phase of his career.
