Tony Khan Comments on Tommaso Ciampa’s Immediate TNT Title Win – Tommaso Ciampa had only recently arrived on AEW television before winning the TNT championship, a move that immediately placed him near the top of the singles picture.
In a recent conversation with YoJoshMartinez, Tony Khan made it clear that the company viewed Ciampa as an established, high-level performer rather than a long-term project.
“I think that AEW is where the best wrestle, and Tommaso Ciampa is a fantastic wrestler,” Khan said in a recent conversation. “Our fans like to see the very best wrestling against the very best. So Tommaso Ciampa is somebody that can come into AEW. Immediately now, he’s the TNT Champion.”
Khan also referenced Ciampa’s connection to Ring of Honor when explaining the decision to spotlight him so quickly.
“Even though he had never been in AEW, he’s a big part of the history of the Ring of Honor promotion,” Khan noted. “As the owner of ROH, having one of the legends coming back, somebody that has great accomplishments and been a champion in ROH, now a champion in AEW as well.”
However, Ciampa’s run as TNT Champion came to a sudden end on the February 11 episode of AEW Dynamite, as Kyle Fletcher defeated him to reclaim the title less than two weeks after Ciampa first captured the belt. The decision quickly sparked debate among viewers, many of whom questioned the timing of the change and the direction of the division.
The title change prompted a wave of negative reactions from fans online, with many arguing that Ciampa should have been given a longer reign to establish himself within AEW. Frustration also centered on the quick pivot to a new program, as Fletcher is already scheduled to face Mark Briscoe in the next phase of the title picture.
The situation highlights AEW’s aggressive approach to booking and its willingness to move quickly with championship storylines. While Ciampa’s arrival and early success signaled confidence in his résumé, the swift loss has shifted the focus back to Fletcher and the direction of the TNT division moving forward.
