Kris Statlander Reflects On AEW Women’s Title Reign Ahead Of Strap Match Defense – Kris Statlander’s run as AEW Women’s World Champion began in dramatic fashion at All Out 2025, where she defeated Toni Storm, Jamie Hayter, and Thekla in a four-way match to capture the title.
The victory ended Storm’s long and widely praised reign and marked a major moment in Statlander’s career. She kept that momentum going with singles victories over Storm and Mercedes Moné in the months that followed, reinforcing her place at the top of the division.
Despite those accomplishments, Statlander admits the experience has not unfolded the way she imagined. Speaking with Denise Salcedo of Instinct Culture, the champion reflected on her reign and the expectations that came with it.
“No, because you can’t ever predict how anything is going to go. I would never want to pretend or try and have this idea in my head of ‘this is exactly how it needs to be.’ The way that I won the title was kind of out of nowhere and it wasn’t an expected thing. I agree with that. It was a little bit of a shock to me as well. However, I’m doing everything that I can to exceed expectations and live up to the hype,” she said.
Statlander’s comments highlight the unpredictable nature of her championship journey. Winning the title in a multi-competitor match added an element of surprise, but her follow-up performances have helped establish credibility and stability at the top of the division. Her reign has focused on proving she belongs in the role rather than trying to match a specific vision of what a championship run should look like.
The next test comes on Dynamite, where Statlander is scheduled to defend the AEW Women’s World Championship against Thekla in a strap match. The stipulation raises the stakes and adds intensity to an already personal rivalry, giving Statlander another opportunity to strengthen her reign while facing one of her toughest challengers yet.
