Backstage Reaction to Santos Escobar’s WWE Re-Signing – As noted, Santos Escobar officially re-signed with WWE this week, and his decision to stay with the company has reportedly been met with widespread enthusiasm backstage.
According to a report from Fightful, Escobar’s re-signing “pleasantly surprised” many within WWE. His previous contract had expired earlier in the week, but a new deal was finalized quickly. WWE is said to have made Escobar a “significantly larger offer” to ensure he remained with the company.
Escobar has yet to issue a public statement about his new contract, but he did share a photo on social media showing himself in a mask during a recent promotional shoot. Before his WWE tenure, Escobar was known internationally as El Hijo del Fantasma, earning an impressive legacy in Mexico. He previously held the CMLL World Middleweight and CMLL World Trios Championships, and remains the longest-reigning AAA World Cruiserweight Champion in history.
While Escobar has not wrestled on WWE television since appearing at the WWE x AAA Worlds Collide event on June 7, he has continued to make select appearances. His last in-ring matches took place at WWE Live Events in Mexico at the end of July. More recently, he has been featured on SmackDown in a managerial capacity, supporting his Legado del Fantasma stablemates, Angel and Berto, during the August 1 episode.
Escobar’s return is expected to strengthen Legado del Fantasma’s presence on SmackDown, though details about his in-ring comeback have not yet been confirmed.
