Cody Rhodes Talks Brock Lesnar’s Return

Cody Rhodes Talks Brock Lesnar’s Return – Cody Rhodes recently appeared on ESPN’s SportsCenter with Matt Barrie to discuss WWE’s new partnership with ESPN, which will see the network begin hosting WWE Premium Live Events in 2026. During their conversation, the topic shifted to Brock Lesnar’s surprise return at SummerSlam.

Lesnar made his return by attacking John Cena moments after Cena was defeated by Rhodes in a high-profile WWE Title match. This marked Lesnar’s first appearance on WWE television since losing to Rhodes at SummerSlam 2023 in Detroit.

When asked what value Lesnar brings to WWE in 2025, Rhodes highlighted how the former NCAA and UFC Heavyweight Champion perfectly represents WWE’s evolving identity.

“I mean, Brock, in terms of athleticism, one of the things — we held tryouts going into SummerSlam weekend. You have so many NIL athletes, so many people who are coming from the world of sport. Tiffany Stratton’s a great example of someone who is on our roster now who came from the world of sport and has grown into becoming a professional wrestler and part of this sports entertainment.

“Brock’s somebody who is an NCAA Champion, a UFC Heavyweight Champion. He fits right in with the direction that WWE is going in terms of sport meeting entertainment,” Rhodes explained.

Rhodes also took a lighthearted moment to remind Barrie — and the audience — of his victory over Lesnar.

“Also, I should point out that the last person who beat Brock Lesnar is standing right here, so… I need that moment,” he joked.

Rhodes continues to carry WWE’s top title while embodying the company’s current vision — blending elite-level athleticism with compelling storytelling. With Lesnar now back in the mix, it appears that WWE is continuing to lean into star power and legitimacy as part of its broader mainstream appeal.
