AEW Unified Championship to Be Defended Under Continental Rules

AEW Unified Championship to Be Defended Under Continental Rules – History was made at AEW All In: Texas, as Kazuchika Okada emerged victorious over Kenny Omega to become the inaugural AEW Unified Champion.

In the co-main event of the night at Globe Life Field, Okada defeated Omega in a hard-fought contest, putting him away with a pair of Rainmakers. The win now makes Okada the holder of three titles: the AEW Continental Championship, the AEW International Championship, and now, the newly established AEW Unified Championship.

The match wasn’t without controversy. Late in the contest, Omega appeared to have the victory in hand after landing the One Winged Angel, but Don Callis interfered by pulling the referee out of the ring. That action brought out Aubrey Edwards to officiate the remainder of the match. Omega managed to kick out of the first Rainmaker under her watch, but Okada connected with a second to seal the win.

During the post-show media scrum, AEW President Tony Khan addressed the finish and announced a significant change to how Unified Championship matches will be conducted moving forward. Khan declared that all future bouts for the AEW Unified Championship will now be contested under Continental Rules, which strictly prohibit outside interference.

“We did it under AEW rules,” Khan stated. “In this case, the referee’s decision is final. We’ve gotten through this amazing run—Kazuchika Okada has been the Continental Champion, and there has never been any outsider interference. If anybody ever interfered in a Continental Title match, they would be fired. Tonight, we fought a match under AEW rules, and the referee had no way of knowing who pulled him out of the ring. If we had been under Continental Rules, I would have fired you [Callis] for that.”

With Okada now reigning as AEW’s first-ever Unified Champion and Continental Rules in effect, the future of AEW’s top-tier title picture looks to be focused on clean, decisive outcomes—without the chaos of outside interference.
