A new backstage update have emerged regarding the Intercontinental Championship ladder match at WrestleMania 42, with indications that the currently announced lineup may not be final.
As previously reported, Penta is set to defend the Intercontinental Championship in a multi-man ladder match against Je’Von Evans, Dragon Lee, JD McDonagh, and Rusev. However, new reporting suggests that WWE could still expand the field before the event.
According to WrestleVotes, the company has discussed the possibility of adding additional talent to the match, including names from AAA as well as members of the SmackDown roster. This update points to the bout still being flexible despite recent qualifying matches taking place.
Those qualifiers were held ahead of a recent WWE RAW taping, where several participants reportedly learned about their involvement at the last minute. Evans secured his spot by defeating Rayo Americano, while Rusev advanced with a win over Otis. McDonagh qualified by defeating Akira Tozawa, and Dragon Lee earned his place by overcoming Grayson Waller. The quick turnaround for those matches further suggests that plans for the bout have been evolving.
The uncertainty around the final lineup has also been reflected in ongoing storylines. Ludwig Kaiser, appearing as El Grande Americano, recently addressed his absence from the match in a social media promo. He criticized the lineup and called the situation “an absolute disgrace,” while teasing that something could still change before WrestleMania.
Kaiser has been involved in a feud with Penta in recent weeks, which adds to speculation that he could be inserted into the match or play a role in the outcome. With WWE still reportedly considering additional participants, his comments may not be part of the storyline alone.
WrestleMania 42 is scheduled to take place on April 18 and 19 at Allegiant Stadium. With the card still taking shape, the Intercontinental Championship ladder match remains one of the most fluid bouts heading into the event.
