Update on Matt Sydal’s AEW Status and Injury Recovery

Update on Matt Sydal’s AEW Status and Injury Recovery – AEW star Matt Sydal has been absent from the company’s programming for several months, and new details have emerged regarding his current situation.

According to a recent report from Fightful Select via Sean Ross Sapp’s Q&A session, a representative from AEW confirmed that Sydal remains under contract with the company. His absence is reportedly due to a serious injury that required surgery. The veteran high-flyer underwent ankle surgery last year to correct an issue he had been dealing with for more than a decade.

Sydal has not competed in AEW since May 2024, with his most recent match overall taking place in July, when he faced Ultimo Dragon at a wrestling festival in France. His final AEW bout came against Konosuke Takeshita on an episode of AEW Dynamite, where he came up short.

A respected veteran of the industry, Sydal officially signed with AEW in November 2020 after making his debut in the Casino Battle Royale at All Out 2020. Throughout his storied career, Sydal has competed across multiple major promotions including ROH, NJPW, and TNA. His accolades include reigns as ROH Tag Team Champion, IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champion (twice, alongside Ricochet), NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Team Champion, and TNA X-Division Champion.

As Sydal continues his recovery, his former opponent Konosuke Takeshita has continued to climb AEW’s ranks. Takeshita, now the AEW International Champion, is set to defend his title against Zack Sabre Jr. in a rematch at AEW Full Gear on November 23 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

There is currently no confirmed timetable for Sydal’s in-ring return, but fans will be hoping to see the high-flying veteran back in action once he’s fully healed.
