Athena Confirms Tony Khan Has Considered All-Women’s AEW Event – ROH Women’s World Champion Athena recently spoke with WFAA 8 in Texas and revealed that AEW President Tony Khan has been considering the idea of an all-women’s AEW event, similar to WWE’s Evolution. According to Athena, the concept has been discussed internally for some time, with the main factor now being when to make it happen.
“Absolutely. I know TK has absolutely thought about that, it’s just about timing when it comes to those things,” Athena said. “We have the best roster in the world. I know everybody says it, but we actually do have the best roster in the world. I do know that is on his brain, it’s been on his brain since I have been in AEW at least. It’s just about timing.”
Athena, who holds the record as the longest-reigning ROH Women’s Champion, has been a central figure across AEW and ROH programming throughout 2025. Her dominance comes at a time when AEW’s women’s division is entering one of its most active and competitive periods, featuring multiple intersecting storylines and new championship pursuits.
This fall, AEW will crown its first-ever Women’s Tag Team Champions through an eight-team tournament that begins on the October 29 “Fright Night Dynamite” episode from Edinburg, Texas. Athena will team with Mercedes Moné, the longest-reigning AEW TBS Champion, as one of the tournament’s headline duos. Other announced teams include Willow Nightingale & Harley Cameron, Sky Blue & Julia Hart, Toni Storm & Mina Shirakawa, Megan Bayne & Penelope Ford, Jamie Hayter & Queen Aminata, Tay Melo & Anna Jay, and Alex Windsor & Riho.
This tournament marks AEW’s second women’s tag competition, following the Deadly Draw Tournament in 2020. The first-round matchups confirmed are Jamie Hayter & Queen Aminata vs. Julia Hart & Skye Blue; Willow Nightingale & Harley Cameron vs. Mercedes Moné & Athena; Toni Storm & Mina Shirakawa vs. Alex Windsor & Riho; and Megan Bayne & Penelope Ford vs. Tay Melo & Anna Jay.
In addition, a separate rivalry is unfolding between AEW Women’s World Champion Kris Statlander and Mercedes Moné. Statlander, who captured the title from Toni Storm at AEW All Out, recently attacked Moné while defending Harley Cameron on AEW Dynamite, escalating tensions ahead of their official title match set for AEW Full Gear on November 22.
With the introduction of the Women’s Tag Team Titles, the growing competition between AEW and ROH champions, and the potential for a historic all-women’s event, Athena believes the company’s women’s division is poised for a breakthrough moment.
