Update on John Cena and Rey Mysterio’s Roles at WWE Survivor Series – With WWE Survivor Series fast approaching on November 29, there remains uncertainty surrounding what John Cena and Rey Mysterio will be doing at the Premium Live Event in San Diego’s Petco Park.
During Wednesday’s edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez discussed the ongoing buildup to Survivor Series and what could be next for WWE’s newest Intercontinental Champion, John Cena. Meltzer noted that this Monday’s RAW from Madison Square Garden is expected to be “a hell of a show” that finalizes the men’s WarGames lineup. However, Cena is not expected to be part of that match.
Meltzer explained that while there had been internal speculation about a potential dream team featuring Cena, CM Punk, Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes, and Jey Uso inside WarGames, that scenario is not in the cards. “I can tell you that is not happening,” Meltzer said. “I was told (of the idea) ‘not even close.’”
As for Rey Mysterio, a long-rumored match against his son, Dominik Mysterio, is also off the table for Survivor Series. Meltzer clarified that no father-versus-son showdown is planned for the event, though it’s unclear whether WWE could instead book a rematch between Cena and Dominik for the Intercontinental Title. Their first singles encounter, originally set for Survivor Series, took place on this past Monday’s RAW in Boston, where Cena successfully defended his championship.
At present, the Survivor Series WarGames card features two matches:
- Men’s WarGames match: CM Punk, Cody Rhodes, and Jey Uso vs. Logan Paul, Bron Breakker, and Bronson Reed
- Women’s WarGames match: Rhea Ripley, IYO SKY, Alexa Bliss, and Charlotte Flair vs. Nia Jax, Lash Legend, Asuka, and Kairi Sane
With just over two weeks left until the event, WWE appears to be finalizing its card, leaving questions about how both Cena and Mysterio will fit into the show’s plans.
