Jim Cornette Rips WWE’s SummerSlam Angle Involving Jelly Roll – On a recent episode of Jim Cornette’s Drive-Thru, the outspoken wrestling veteran didn’t hold back when discussing the celebrity-driven storyline from Saturday Night’s Main Event that now sets up a tag match for WWE SummerSlam. The storyline features Randy Orton teaming with country-rap star Jelly Roll against Drew McIntyre and Logan Paul.
Cornette expressed particular disdain for the involvement of Jelly Roll, criticizing WWE for allowing a non-athlete to get physical with trained performers. The segment in question saw Jelly Roll save Orton from Logan Paul’s attack by pulling Paul off and landing a forearm shot, sending the YouTuber-turned-wrestler to the outside. Cornette scoffed at the execution, describing it as awkward and unconvincing.
“Here comes Roll, and he pulls Logan Paul off, and they get nose to nose, and Roll hits him with a forearm, kind of sort of somewhere around there, and Logan Paul went down and rolled out,” Cornette recounted.
He also blasted the broader creative direction:
“Sometimes you’re embarrassed to be a wrestling fan… The AEW matches never end. And in WWE, the singers interrupt the wrestling. And in the WWE, fat f—ing singers can beat up the wrestlers. That’s the best way to get booked well, is to sing.”
Cornette further commented on Jelly Roll’s physique, even after his weight loss, saying:
“It’s like, the jelly has been sucked out… At least when he was 500 pounds, you could think, you know, get three steps of momentum going for a guy, and you got 500 pounds of just f—ing mass coming at you.”
Comparing the angle to previous celebrity crossovers, Cornette pointed out that past stars like Dennis Rodman or Andy Kaufman had more plausible involvement in wrestling. He mocked WWE’s choice to feature Jelly Roll in a main event-level angle:
“These are two main event, f—ing guys against Randy Orton and Jelly Roll… Is this any better than Jay Leno? At least Leno was in shape back then.”
Cornette didn’t stop at the booking. He mocked Jelly Roll’s music genre—a fusion of country and rap—coining it “crap.”
“Crap. Country and rap, crap. There they go. Jelly Roll’s genre is crap,” he said, while also questioning whether the singer has the mainstream presence to justify such a major spotlight in WWE.
The angle will lead to Jelly Roll’s first in-ring appearance at SummerSlam in August, where he will team with Randy Orton to take on Logan Paul and Drew McIntyre. While WWE is banking on the star power, Cornette is far from convinced.
