Update on Rey Mysterio Injury and Possible Replacement at WrestleMania 41 – Rey Mysterio’s scheduled match at WrestleMania 41 against El Grande Americano may be in jeopardy following a potential injury suffered during Friday’s episode of WWE SmackDown.
As noted, Mysterio teamed up with Dragon Lee and Rey Fenix to take on American Made—comprised of El Grande Americano and The Creed Brothers—in a fast-paced six-man tag team bout. While the team of Mysterio, Lee, and Fenix picked up the win, concern quickly turned to Mysterio’s condition after the match. The Hall of Famer appeared visibly uncomfortable and required help from WWE staff to make his way to the back.
While WWE has yet to issue an official update, Bryan Alvarez reported via X (formerly Twitter) that Mysterio’s status remains unclear as of this morning. Alvarez noted, “I am told still no word on Rey Mysterio, but Dragon Lee is the likely replacement if he can’t wrestle. They could do Fenix, but my presumption is el Grande needs to win the first match and they probably wouldn’t want to beat Fenix so early.”
Rey Mysterio was set to face El Grande Americano in a high-profile singles match at WrestleMania 41. The storyline has been built around generational clashes and national pride, with El Grande Americano—revealed to be Chad Gable under the mask—targeting lucha legends.
Should Mysterio be unable to compete, Dragon Lee stepping in would maintain storyline continuity while protecting other major names like Rey Fenix from early defeats on the grand stage. WWE is expected to provide clarification later today ahead of tonight’s WrestleMania 41 Night One.
