The Opps Win AEW World Trios Titles on Dynamite Spring BreakThru – A new era has begun in AEW’s trios division, as Samoa Joe, Katsuyori Shibata, and Powerhouse Hobbs—collectively representing The Opps—captured the AEW World Trios Championships in the main event of AEW Dynamite: Spring BreakThru.
The bout originally advertised as The Opps (Joe, Shibata, and Hook) versus The Death Riders (Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, and Wheeler Yuta) underwent a late change due to an angle announced at the top of Wednesday’s broadcast. Commentary revealed that Hook had been attacked by The Death Riders before the show and was taken to the hospital, with Taz notably absent from commentary after accompanying his son.
In Hook’s place, Powerhouse Hobbs stepped up and joined Joe and Shibata in the title bout. On the opposing side, Moxley substituted for PAC, who was initially advertised to team with Castagnoli and Yuta.
The match itself was chaotic, filled with interference from various AEW stars. Willow Nightingale and Swerve Strickland ran interference on behalf of The Opps, while The Young Bucks got involved to support The Death Riders, continuing their unstable alliance with the Blackpool Combat Club.
The finish came when Joe locked in the Coquina Clutch on Moxley, forcing the former AEW World Champion to pass out. With the submission win, The Opps officially became the new AEW World Trios Champions.
Following the victory, the AEW babyface locker room emptied to celebrate The Death Riders’ defeat in what felt like a symbolic passing of the torch to a new power faction within AEW.
It remains unclear whether the Hook injury angle was scripted to explain a real medical issue, as he was visibly ill during a match the previous week. AEW has yet to officially confirm the status of Hook moving forward.
