Shawn Michaels on the Difference Between a Superkick and His Sweet Chin Music – Shawn Michaels knows a thing or two about finishing matches in memorable fashion. With a career that spanned decades and multiple championships, “The Heartbreak Kid” built a legacy around his signature Sweet Chin Music—a move that, during his in-ring prime, was almost always enough to seal a victory.
However, in today’s wrestling climate, things have changed. The superkick has become a widely used move, and often, it’s not the end of a match. Speaking on The Bobby Bones Show, Michaels offered insight into how wrestling evolves and the challenges that come with maintaining the integrity of classic finishers.
“We go through phases and peaks and valleys with that,” Michaels explained. “You’re looking to give your fans the most for their entertainment dollar. Nine times out of ten, that’s excitement and movement.”
Michaels noted that the expectations for younger, less-established talent are different than for main roster veterans.
“Certainly, from an NXT standpoint, we don’t have the equity in our superstars that a main roster has,” he said. “That young superstar will probably have to move faster, do more exciting things to keep that viewer invested.”
Still, Michaels emphasized the importance of preserving the value of finishing moves, especially those with historical significance.
“Usually, what happens is we do that, and after a while, it goes too far and we have to reel and rein everybody back in. That’s something you have to keep your finger on the pulse of,” he said. “Everybody, especially my finisher, the superkick, I’m now understanding that a superkick is one thing, but Sweet Chin Music, that’s a finisher.”
He added, “When you get into those types of things, you want to keep the integrity of the move. We obviously want that to be noteworthy. You have to call those as you see them and hopefully the fanbase appreciates and understands that.”
Though retired from active competition, Michaels reminded fans earlier this year that he still has some Sweet Chin Music left in the tank, delivering a surprise kick to Kevin Owens at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event in January.
Elsewhere during the interview, Michaels commented on the multi-person matches at NXT Stand & Deliver.
