Rey Fenix to Replace Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania 41 – Rey Mysterio has announced that he will not be able to compete at WrestleMania 41, confirming earlier speculation surrounding his injury status following Friday night’s episode of WWE SmackDown. The WWE Hall of Famer was scheduled to face El Grande Americano in a highly anticipated matchup, but was officially ruled out after WWE medical staff deemed him unfit to compete.
Mysterio was visibly injured during the six-man tag team match on SmackDown where he teamed with Dragon Lee and Rey Fenix to defeat American Made (Gable, Julius Creed, and Brutus Creed). Following the bout, fans and cameras captured Mysterio being assisted to the back by medical personnel, raising immediate concerns about his WrestleMania status.
On Saturday’s Countdown to WrestleMania 41, Michael Cole confirmed that Mysterio’s condition was still being evaluated and that the match was “in flux.” Those uncertainties have now been put to rest, as Mysterio took to WWE platforms to deliver the news himself: he will not be wrestling at WrestleMania 41.
In his place, fellow Lucha star and longtime ally Rey Fenix will step in to face El Grande Americano. Fenix, a former AEW and ROH champion, is expected to bring his signature high-flying style to what now becomes a must-see bout between two of the most athletic competitors on the card.
It remains to be seen how the sudden change will affect El Grande Americano’s game plan, but with Fenix’s popularity and skill set, WWE has ensured fans will still get a top-tier contest on the grandest stage of them all.
