Pat McAfee Faces Potential Legal Action Over ESPN Show Controversy – A new report from The Athletic has revealed allegations regarding WWE commentator Pat McAfee and his conduct on The Pat McAfee Show on ESPN, which may lead to legal action.
The controversy stems from the February 26, 2025 episode, where NFL insider Adam Schefter appeared as a guest. During the broadcast, McAfee brought up an unverified social media rumor claiming that an 18-year-old University of Mississippi freshman had been involved in an affair with her boyfriend’s father.
According to the report, Schefter attempted to steer the conversation toward Mississippi quarterback Jaxson Dart, but McAfee and his co-hosts continued making crude jokes before shifting to Dart’s NFL Draft prospects. The young woman at the center of the false rumor, Mary Kate Cornett, was never named on the show. However, the story had gone viral on social media after originating from YikYak, an anonymous posting platform, and later spreading on X with Cornett’s Instagram photo attached.
McAfee was not the only media personality to address the rumor. Figures from Barstool Sports also commented on it. Cornett has since reported experiencing severe harassment, which led her to move into emergency housing and attend classes remotely.
The report further states that law enforcement was dispatched to Cornett’s mother’s home in Houston, Texas, in a swatting incident. Additionally, Cornett’s phone number was leaked, leading to a surge in offensive voicemails.
Amid growing backlash, Cornett and her boyfriend publicly denied the rumor. Her family is now exploring legal action against McAfee, ESPN, and others involved in spreading the false information.
Cornett, who has secured legal representation, expressed her frustration, stating:
“I would like people to be held accountable for what they’ve done. You’re ruining my life by talking about it on your show for nothing but attention, but here I am staying up until 5 in the morning, every night, throwing up, not eating because I’m so anxious about what’s going to happen for the rest of my life.”
With Cornett’s legal team preparing to take action, the situation could have serious consequences for McAfee and ESPN. Stay tuned to WrestlingAttitude, WA.Com On Facebook, Twitter/X, Bluesky and Google News for more.
