Jim Ross Shares Thoughts on AEW Dynasty – Veteran wrestling commentator Jim Ross recently opened up about his limited involvement in AEW’s Dynasty pay-per-view event and offered candid thoughts on the booking of the AEW World Championship main event.
Speaking on the latest episode of his Grilling JR podcast, Ross revealed that he only called the opening bout of the evening, which featured Will Ospreay taking on Kevin Knight. “I enjoyed my part of it,” Ross said. “I was on the first match of the night with Will Ospreay. I enjoyed Ospreay and Kevin Knight. They’re good. They’re both very good. It was fun in that regard.”
Ross was not part of the commentary team for the remainder of the event. “I didn’t get to see the entire pay-per-view. I left the arena and went back to the hotel,” he explained. Showing his trademark humor, he added, “That’s what you get when you’re a 50-year guy. You can pull your stunts. It’s all good.”
The Hall of Famer also acknowledged that he was unaware of how the show ended, including the AEW World Championship result. “Somebody told me it was like 12:30 ’till they got out of there, 12:30 AM, and I think that might be a little bit long, but that’s just me talking,” Ross said. He then had to ask his co-host Conrad Thompson about the outcome of the main event. “Did Swerve win the title?” he asked, before being informed that Jon Moxley had retained the championship and Swerve Strickland was unsuccessful.
Ross was asked if he believed AEW missed a major opportunity by not putting the title on Strickland at Dynasty. He gave a thoughtful response: “Arguably, yes. Was it a deal breaker? Not really.”
Strickland’s failure to win the championship has been a topic of conversation among fans, especially given the interference from The Young Bucks during the match, which cost him the title. While some see it as a missed chance to crown a new top star, others—like Ross—feel it wasn’t a critical mistake in the long run.
As AEW continues its post-Dynasty programming, Ross’s comments provide a veteran’s perspective on the pacing, storytelling, and behind-the-scenes realities of working in the modern wrestling business.
