Earlier in the day, Dave Meltzer reported that Owens had undergone neck surgery earlier today. However, Fightful Select later disputed that report, stating that Owens has not yet had the procedure.
According to Fightful, sources within WWE confirmed that Owens is still awaiting surgery. Those close to the situation reportedly do not expect him to return to in-ring action in 2025. The same sources also noted that it’s possible Owens could be sidelined through WrestleMania 42.
PWInsider also confirmed that original report is incorrect, as Owens was actually spotted this AM in the Atlanta Airport and showed no signs of having undergone the type of intensive surgery he will require yet
Owens previously revealed that he suffered the neck injury in a match back in January but didn’t realize the severity until receiving MRI results months later. He discussed the situation publicly on a recent episode of WWE SmackDown, informing fans that he would be stepping away from the ring to undergo surgery.
Though Owens estimated his recovery could take anywhere from six months to a year, he assured fans that a return was “pretty likely.” Meltzer echoed that optimism, writing that most wrestlers who undergo similar neck surgeries eventually return to the ring.
Owens was originally scheduled to face Randy Orton at WrestleMania 41 before the injury forced plans to change. His most recent appearance came at Elimination Chamber, where he competed in an unsanctioned match against longtime friend and rival Sami Zayn. Zayn has not appeared on WWE programming since that event, and Orton’s opponent for WrestleMania 41 remains unannounced.
