Tony Khan Comments on Recent AEW Releases

Tony Khan Comments on Recent AEW Releases – AEW has made a notable shift in its approach to talent releases, as evidenced by the recent departures of Miro, Ricky Starks, Malakai Black, and Rey Fenix.

All four wrestlers had been absent from AEW programming for varying periods but still had time remaining on their contracts before being let go. This marks a departure from AEW’s previous stance on contract releases, as the company had been reluctant to grant them in the past.

During the AEW Revolution media call, AEW President Tony Khan addressed the change in philosophy when asked about the company’s handling of release requests. Khan acknowledged that his approach had evolved, stating:

“I do think it’s a case-by-case basis. I think everything is a case-by-case basis, and so much of life is a case-by-case basis. Philosophically, there is a change in what I’ve been doing. It felt like the right thing for the company and everyone involved at this point. That’s the thinking behind that. It’s on a case-by-case basis, and they are all different situations. In this case, they did have similar outcomes. It’s fair to ask why now and why I wouldn’t have done that before. I just decided that’s what I thought was the right thing to do at this point.”

Of the four released talents, Ricky Starks has already signed with WWE, while Miro, Malakai Black, and Rey Fenix remain free agents. Their future plans remain uncertain, but the move highlights AEW’s evolving stance on talent management.
