On the March 4 edition of WWE NXT, Spears emerged victorious in the main event, defeating Tony D’Angelo to capture the NXT North American Championship. Despite a determined effort from the now-former champion, lingering injuries to his back ultimately cost him the title.
The match took a chaotic turn when interference from both competitors’ factions escalated. D’Angelo’s allies—Channing “Stacks” Lorenzo, Luca Crusifino, and Adriana Rizzo—clashed with Spears’ group, which includes Izzi Dame, Niko Vance, and Brooks Jensen. Amid the chaos, Stacks inadvertently became a factor in the outcome. When Spears struck him, Stacks collided with D’Angelo, sending the champion crashing back-first onto a steel chair at ringside.
Though D’Angelo showed resilience, his weakened back failed him at a crucial moment. As he attempted to execute his signature Spinebuster, his body gave out, allowing Spears to capitalize. Spears collapsed onto his opponent and hooked the leg for the decisive pinfall, securing his championship victory.
D’Angelo’s title reign lasted 142 days, during which he successfully defended the championship ten times. His tenure as champion came to an end in dramatic fashion, marking a significant shift in NXT’s landscape with Spears now holding the gold.
