MVP Talks Scripted Promos in WWE – MVP quickly learned that scripted promos in WWE didn’t align with his natural delivery. During an appearance on the F Y’all Podcast with CT Fletcher, MVP opened up about a key moment early in his career that helped shape his approach to promos and his overall WWE journey.
MVP recounted a segment where he was asked to sign his contract at a press conference. When he received the script for his lines, he immediately felt that it didn’t reflect his true voice. One particular line, “Check out these fine threads I be wearing,” left him baffled. The line was so far removed from his personality that MVP knew it wouldn’t work.
Unsatisfied with the script, MVP went to Dusty Rhodes, one of WWE’s most iconic figures, for advice. “I went to Dusty and showed him the script and said, ‘What the fuck is this?’ Dusty looked at it and said, ‘Damn, baby. That’s awful. I don’t know who wrote that st, but go do what you do.’” This moment marked a turning point for MVP, who realized he was better off working from bullet points, where he could speak authentically, rather than reading off a rigid script.
MVP explained the frustration of dealing with a writer who wasn’t even present during the filming of the segment. He asked, “Who wrote this s**t?” only to find out that the writer was in Connecticut, far removed from the live event. This further cemented his belief that he needed more creative freedom.
MVP said, “I figured out early on that ‘they’ can’t write for me. You can give me what you want, give me an overview, and let me go out there and do it. Don’t ever again hand me some s**t like that.”
His dissatisfaction with scripted promos wasn’t just about personal preference but also about delivering something real and relatable to the audience. MVP knew that to succeed in WWE, he needed to be himself and stay true to his persona, not just read words off a page.
Today, MVP is making waves in AEW as part of the Hurt Syndicate alongside Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin. The trio, with Lashley and Benjamin holding the AEW Tag Team Championship, is a dominant force in the promotion. This evolution in MVP’s career, from WWE to AEW, has allowed him to further develop his character, all while staying true to his core belief that authenticity on the microphone is key.
