During the pay-per-view, director Ash Avildsen was joined at ringside by Lewis and Kelli Berglund—who portrays Nell Stewart—for a brief interview segment with Tony Schiavone. Avildsen encouraged Schiavone to ask the actors about what they had learned about professional wrestling, setting up an innocent enough question. But Lewis’ response quickly raised eyebrows.
“One thing I learned about pro wrestlers, you all know you’re going to win before anybody else does. So thank you for teaching me that,” she stated.
Her remark was met with groans from the live audience and reportedly from those watching backstage. While the scripted nature of professional wrestling is no secret, performers take great pride in the physicality, storytelling, and unpredictability of their craft. Lewis’ casual mention of predetermined finishes struck a nerve with some in the industry. One source noted that while her comment wasn’t meant to be offensive, it “wasn’t exactly received well.”
