Update on Rey Fenix and Possible AEW Release – AEW has made several roster cuts in recent days, parting ways with notable names such as Ricky Starks, Malakai Black, Miro, and Bear Boulder. The reasons for these departures vary, with some talent requesting their release while others were let go due to external circumstances.
Bear Boulder’s exit follows his recent arrest for domestic battery, while Malakai Black’s contract simply reached its expiration. Ricky Starks and Miro both requested to leave AEW, leading to their departures. However, not everyone looking for an exit was granted one.
Rey Fenix is among the names who reportedly want to leave AEW, but the company has exercised its option to extend his contract due to injury-related absences. According to reports, AEW added close to a year to his deal, effectively delaying any potential free agency. Speculation suggests that once his contract expires, he and Penta El Zero M could reunite as the Lucha Bros in WWE.
During the NXT post-show on Tuesday night, Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful revealed that Fenix was at one point considered for release but ultimately remained with AEW.
“I had heard Friday that AEW releases were either happening or coming. At that moment, I thought it was just the Bear Boulder situation, which they fortunately very quickly took care of. I had heard for a while that within AEW, they had at least considered releasing or letting contracts lapse on a few talent that were not happy and wanted to go elsewhere. At one point, they considered Rey Fenix. They didn’t end up doing that,” Sapp explained.
As AEW continues adjusting its roster, more changes could be on the horizon, especially for talent looking to move on.
