NJPW Announcer Suspended Following Controversial AEW Comments – Chris Charlton, a prominent voice for New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW), has been placed on indefinite leave following controversial commentary during the NJPW x AEW Wrestle Dynasty event.
The situation gained traction when Charlton was absent from NJPW’s New Year Dash!! on January 6. The Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer confirmed his leave, linking it to remarks Charlton made during the high-profile match between Kenny Omega and Gabe Kidd. His most notable comment referred to AEW President Tony Khan as a “money mark.” He also delivered critical remarks about the careers of former NJPW stars Will Ospreay, Jay White, and Kazuchika Okada since they joined AEW, as well as expressing disapproval of AEW’s Continental Classic tournament.
According to a report from Fightful Select’s Sean Ross Sapp, Charlton’s absence is a suspension set for two months. While some within NJPW appreciated Charlton’s candid approach, others felt he crossed a line. NJPW clarified that neither AEW nor Tony Khan influenced the suspension decision. However, sources suggest AEW was displeased with the comments.
Charlton has not directly addressed the situation beyond deleting a tweet related to his commentary.
The incident has raised questions about the balance between honest analysis and professional diplomacy in wrestling commentary, particularly given the strong working relationship between NJPW and AEW. The two promotions have co-produced major events, including the annual Forbidden Door since 2022. Wrestle Dynasty featured appearances from top stars like Omega, Claudio Castagnoli, Brody King, and Konosuke Takeshita, reflecting the ongoing collaboration between both companies.
