“I never understood that,” JBL admitted. “Vince wanted to keep things on a more cerebral level. I think that was the reason for the medical center. Plus, he didn’t want people to call the hospital. He didn’t want people to say, ‘He’s at the Baltimore Hospital,’ because they would call the hospital. If you say, ‘He’s at a local medical center,’ you have no idea where he went. You have plausible deniability.”
JBL also revealed that McMahon was infamously particular about commentary language, despising words he deemed unsophisticated.
“Vince didn’t like a lot of things like ‘very.’ You’re very happy? Learn English. Say ‘ecstatic.’ Vince hated the word ‘that.’ ‘That arm.’ No, it’s ‘the arm’ or ‘right arm.’ He thought ‘that’ sounded redneck-ish or stupid.”
Recalling a memorable incident involving Michael Cole, JBL recounted how McMahon’s disdain for the word “that” led to a backstage eruption during a pay-per-view broadcast.
“Michael is about seven seconds from going off air, promoting RAW or something, and he says, ‘Everything was going fine until he hit him with that door.’ You hear this baritone billionaire erupt. Vince, so happy with a great pay-per-view, loses it. ‘It’s the door! Not that door!’ Michael stays professional and reads through it like Vince isn’t screaming. It was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.”
