Tony Khan Discusses Black Wrestlers in AEW – AEW continues to distinguish itself with a diverse and star-studded roster, earning praise for providing opportunities to top-tier talent from various backgrounds. Black wrestlers have been integral to the promotion’s success, with stars like Swerve Strickland making history as AEW’s first Black world champion, alongside other high-profile talents like Bobby Lashley, MVP, and Shelton Benjamin.
During an interview with CHGO Sports, AEW CEO Tony Khan addressed the company’s focus on featuring Black talent prominently in its programming. When asked whether this was a deliberate strategy or a result of the performers’ abilities, Khan emphasized a mix of both.
“Well, I think you just said it,” Khan replied. “I’m conscious of it, but I also think that these are some of the best wrestlers in AEW you just named. So we’re really lucky to have those great stars. We’ve been fortunate to be able to build up some great stars and also have a lot of great free agents come in to where I think so many of the top wrestlers, some of the top Black wrestlers in the world are in AEW, and I really think most of the top Black wrestlers in the world are now in AEW. But I think that is a conscious thing, but I also think it’s great.”
Khan’s comments highlight AEW’s commitment to showcasing talent based on merit while also recognizing the importance of representation. The company’s efforts to elevate Black wrestlers as top stars have resonated with fans and industry observers alike, further solidifying AEW’s reputation as a platform where the best in wrestling can shine.
