Malakai Black Dismisses Retirement and AEW Exit Rumors – On this week’s AEW Dynamite, Adam Cole defeated Malakai Black in a hard-fought singles match, concluding with a respectful embrace between the two competitors. Following the match, Cole took the microphone to thank Black for the bout. Meanwhile, Black exited the ring, waving to the fans on his way to the back, a gesture that quickly fueled online speculation regarding his future with AEW.
Rumors of a potential retirement or departure for Malakai surfaced almost immediately, with fans pointing to his past injury history. Addressing these rumors directly on Instagram, Black clarified that he is neither injured nor planning to retire. He expressed frustration with the recurring assumptions that he’s stepping away, saying, “Here we are once more. The match is done and again everybody is, ‘Oh, he’s retiring. He’s retiring because of his injuries,’ and this and that. I’m neither of these things. I’m not injured, nor am I retiring, nor am I leaving. I feel this happens every match I have and I don’t understand how many times you’re going to say these things and them not happening and people are going to fall for that. I haven’t been injured for more than three years. I’m referring to my back injury, of course, and I only posted about that after it was done. I’m fine. I’ve been fine for the longest time. I would really appreciate it if that stuff stops. If I’m going to retire, you’re going to hear it from me and not after Adam cuts a promo as a thank you for the match because that’s all it was.”
Black referenced his past back injury, noting that he hasn’t been sidelined by it or any other injury in over three years. He emphasized that if he ever decides to retire, fans would hear it directly from him.
Black’s statement aimed to dispel the frequent rumors that surface after his high-profile matches, reiterating that Cole’s post-match promo was simply a show of respect and nothing more. His comments appear to put to rest the speculation, aligning with AEW CEO Tony Khan’s prior statement in July 2022 that Black is under a long-term contract, reportedly lasting “almost five years.”
This firm response from Black underscores his dedication to AEW and his plans to continue competing, leaving fans with a clear message: any announcement about his career status will come directly from him.
