Vince McMahon Attempted to Buy Back “Mr. McMahon” Docuseries from Netflix – Netflix is set to release the highly anticipated docuseries on Vince McMahon’s life and career, titled Mr. McMahon, on September 25. The series will consist of six one-hour episodes and is expected to dive deep into McMahon’s controversial journey as the architect of WWE’s global success.
The project, directed by Chris Smith—known for Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened—and executive produced by Bill Simmons, faced significant developments during its production. According to Matthew Belloni of Puck, Smith was nearly finished with the series when the hush money scandal surrounding McMahon broke in the summer of 2022. The team then updated the docuseries to include McMahon’s involvement in the scandal, his return to WWE, and his eventual departure.
McMahon, who stepped down from WWE following a lawsuit filed by former employee Janel Grant, alleging sex trafficking and rape, has expressed concerns over how the series portrays him. Grant did not participate in the filming, but her lawsuit plays a key role in shaping the narrative. In a rare statement, McMahon said much of the content was “misrepresented,” particularly regarding Grant’s claims, which he labeled as stemming from an affair. Ann Callis, Grant’s lawyer, countered McMahon’s characterization in a statement.
Reportedly, McMahon grew anxious after viewing early footage of the series and attempted to buy it back from Netflix. TKO CEO Ari Emanuel also lobbied Netflix to reconsider the portrayal of the “Mr. McMahon” persona. However, Netflix declined to sell the documentary back, and the series is moving forward as scheduled.
Fans are now eager to see how the docuseries addresses the real-life controversies and the legacy of Vince McMahon.
