On the 9/18 episode of AEW Dynamite, Ricochet confronted Ospreay backstage after Ospreay’s victory over The Beast Mortos and before his trios match with Kyle Fletcher and Konosuke Takeshita. During the confrontation, Ricochet addressed Ospreay’s earlier challenge for him to “go get his wins up” and pointed out how he had done just that.
Ricochet noted that many in AEW seem focused on proving themselves against him, but no one has been calling out Ospreay as much. Taking matters into his own hands, Ricochet announced that he had spoken to AEW President Tony Khan and secured a match for the International Championship, set to take place the week after Ospreay’s upcoming tag team match against the Young Bucks.
This showdown between Ricochet and Ospreay revives a storied rivalry. They’ve faced off in nine singles matches, with Ospreay winning five and Ricochet four, according to Cagematch. One of their most iconic encounters took place at New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s Best of the Super Juniors tournament in 2016. Their match at the Dynamite anniversary show will mark their first meeting since 2017, making it one of the most anticipated matches of the night.
